  4. Put on more than one layer of clothing. By wearing a couple of layers, you retain more body heat.
  5. If you’re throwing a party or having company over at your home, turn the thermostat down. The additional body heat will add to the room.
  6. For hardwood and tile floors, invest in thick rugs to keep your feet warm and to hold in heat.
  7. If you’ve been cooking, leave your oven door cracked to let the heat escape to add warmth to your home. Use caution with children and pets in the home.

  3. Use the drapes and curtains to your advantage again. Keep them shut during the hottest part of the day to shut out heat and open them at night to cool your home.
  4. Turn you lights off when you’re not using them. Not only will it save energy, it’ll reduce the heat that emits from them.
  5. Make sure air ducts and fans are clear from any blockages. Dust them regularly and check that no furniture or other obstacles are in the way of them being able to freely distribute air.
  6. Plant trees. Having trees around your house will provide shade from the sun to keep your home cooler.

  1. Switch to energy saving light bulbs. They typically last longer and can save up to 80% less energy than regular light bulbs. These bulbs aren’t anymore costly than standard bulbs but you can always contact your local energy provider to see if you can get free or discounted light bulbs.
  2. Unplug any electronics, even when they are turned off. This includes televisions, lamps, computers, and cell phone chargers that you may leave plugged in constantly. Even though they pull energy very slowly, every little bit adds up.
  3. When washing your clothes, use cold or warm water. Using hot water can raise your bill up to $50 a year.
  4. After washing clothes, partially dry them in the dryer or dry clothes outside on a clothing line when it’s possible.
  5. Get a laptop. Desktop computers use more electricity than laptops. Having your laptop wherever you go will give you the chance to work remotely and make some money from basic things like content writing or editing non-native speaker’s copy.
  6. If you can, use a microwave instead of a conventional oven. Microwaves use about half of the electricity as a standard oven.
  7. Even better than a microwave, use crock pots and slow cookers. They use about 75% less energy than stove tops or ovens.
  8. Keep your refrigerator door shut and make sure the seal is tight. The refrigerator has to pull more energy to keep cool if there are leaks in the seal.
  9. Rinse dishes with cold water before loading them into the dishwasher. By doing this, you can bypass the dishwasher’s pre-rinse cycle to save water and energy.
  10. Always run full loads when washing/drying clothes, or using the dishwasher. Full loads use no more energy than small loads.
  11. Replace old appliances with new, energy efficient ones. It’s worth it to invest in these products.
  12. Install low-flow shower heads. They cost no more than $20 each and will save gallons of hot water a year. If you can afford it, install low-flow toilets as well.
  13. Fix leaky water faucets and pipes. Each extra drop of water per second can add up to over 150 gallons a week.
  14. Dust light bulbs and fixtures. Up to 50% of the light can be blocked by a layer of dust.

How to Save Energy on Daily Commutes or Traveling

We’ve all got places to go, and people to see. If we have to drive, let’s take steps to conserve as much energy as we can.

  1. Do not run your vehicle if it is not necessary. Running your car when you aren’t driving causes more pollution and wastes fuel.
  2. Park in the shade to keep your car cool during warm weather to reduce air conditioner use.
  3. Open the windows or keep them shut instead of using the air conditioner or heating system.
  4. When purchasing a new car, choose one with good mileage. A car that gets 25 miles per gallon burns fuel faster than a car that gets 40 miles per gallon.
  5. Make sure tires are properly inflated to ensure you are getting the best mileage.
  6. If at all possible, carpool, walk, bike, or use public transit to save fuel.

Hydro Power Walking Shoe Makes Electricity Generation easy with H2O

Ever since we’ve been in elementary school we have been lectured on the dangers of mixing water and electricity. It seems like if you pursue the Internet long enough you are bound to find some bizarre story about a bathroom appliance finding its way into a tub, only to fry its owner.

It’s an understood law that water and electricity shouldn’t mix. On the other hand, nearly a fourth of the world’s energy is powered by water.

Water has tremendous energetic qualities, and that energy can be funnelled into electricity. When we think of hydro power plants we think of enormous dams, and huge water reservoirs, but hydro power may be finding its way into our personal lives very quickly.

 The Potential of H2O (water)

It is challenging for us to measure how much oomph water has; nevertheless if you have ever been rafting, you have experienced some of H2O’s potential. Consider the magnitude of water flowing in a river, and how kinetic energy is being generated. If you can visualize a river overflowing with its majestic currents and substantial undertows you have a very notable source of energy. Water has a high capacity for motion acquisition.

Power plants that cultivate this energy are designed to take this momentum and harness it, transforming it into power. The essence of hydro power is fairly basic: turbines are rotated by a source of water, which then empowers generators as highlighted below.

The Engineering

Hydropower facilities, contrary to popular belief, have minimal crucial components. To begin, there is the dam, which is leveraged to generate a basin source. Generally, these reservoirs are magnanimous bodies of water similar to the concept of a lake.

The next crucial aspect is the intake which unlocks the dam, creating a passage for the water.  As a result kinetic energy is manufactured; this in turn allows the power to be harvested. Following this comes the turbine—the component that is integrated into, and rotates the generator.

Turbines have been known to have a weight of over 170 tons, and, in spite of this weight, can rotate nearly 100 times in just one minute. The turbine powers the generator. As the blades of the turbine move, a series of magnetic structures shift inside the generator as well.

Massive magnets revolve past coils made of copper, stimulating an alternating current or AC, eliminating the need for electrical conversion technology such as a magnum inverter. Once the AC is made you have electricity in the workings.

Komarechka realize the kinetic properties of walking and designed a brilliantly simple idea of harnessing the motion of a footstep and transforming the movement into energy. The idea is that fluid would be placed in conduit pipes and would be kept in constant motion by the foot walking.

The person who wore the shoes would have a small electrical receptor on his belt, or some other discreet place, that would connect to a tiny generator, while the shoes allow him to power small electronic devices.
