Google kicks off products launch with Nigeria as a major market.

In the company conference held in Lagos, Mr Pichai addressed Nigerians and International observers as he revealed that Google would be launching a series of new products and services on the Nigerian market. These products from various broad sectors show the highly diversified interests of the technology giant.

Among the products launched were Google Street View. Google Street View allows the user to see and experience the sights of places, landmarks and monuments as well as explore places with natural phenomena. This is all done from the comfort of your room or on the go. This allows one to truly explore and understand any place of interest from your device. According to a tweet released by the “Google in Africa” handle “You can now explore the vibrant city of Lagos from your couch…”

Besides Google Street View, the Company also announced the new Google service that effectively allows for social media styled posts to rank directly on Google’s search results. The new service “Post on Google” allows for users to create posts that rank directly in search engine results. This allows Nigerian companies, celebrities as well as important personalities to create content on their social media account that then appears directly in Google’s search page results. This service is currently available in just 3 countries: U.S.A, Brazil and now Nigeria.

Google to Train 10 Million Africans.

Google also restated their commitment to aiding and facilitating development in Nigeria. The Company has also pledged to help train 10 Million Africans over the next five years.

It further went on to elucidate that over a 100,000 Nigerians will be receive training as software developers by the company. The CEO further pledged the company’s full backing to help prepare Nigerians and Africans for the jobs of the future.

The company further went on to express its delight at the new Telcos service coming to Nigeria. This service will allow Nigerians to make payments on their phones without using their credit or debit cards. Simply put, this allows Nigerians to pay for services using their airtime. Currently, just 2 service providers will have the new feature powered by Google: MTN and 9Mobile.

Google is opening more doors.

The Google CEO’s visit has come just little over a year since the visit of Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO. Many pundits expect a very rapid change of the technology landscape in the country in the next five years. This highlights the interest many international corporations have in Nigeria as growing market. It also helps highlight the potential on the African continent and the need to explore the African market to further facilitate growth and development. Google.org is planning to commit $20M to African non-profit organization over next 5 years, and that’s a huge development for non profits in the country.

Why should you add images to your social media posts?

According to Stonetemple, they’ve come up with a study of 4 million tweets that those posts with a picture has an increase in generating retweets and likes than those with no images at all. With these images, it increases the social authority of that Twitter profile. However, it does not mean that you should always put images in all of your social media posts. You can mix it with links, videos, GIFs to balance everything in your social media profile.

Furthermore, images could help you increase user engagement that leads to level up your social authority. Influence is very powerful, and it’s one of the reasons why entrepreneurs and social media marketers are successful in their campaigns.

What are the recommended image dimensions for posting on social media?

For each social media platform that you are in for your business, you need to follow the exact image size for better optimization. Without further ado, here are they:

Facebook – 1200 x 630px (470px minimum width)

Twitter – Any dimension will do as long it’s on a 2:1 ratio (506 x 253px is the minimum image dimension)

Instagram – For best quality in posting images, the image must be at least 1080px. For square dimensions, it must be at least 510 x 510px.

Pinterest – Any 2:3 image ratio and a minimum of 600px will do. For pins, 736 x 1000px is the optimal size.

LinkedIn – Before you post, make sure that they are of good quality and size. Sponsored updates have images with 800 x 400px, which is the optimal size.

Google+ – 426px is the minimum image dimension for sharing. The optimal size for uploading is 2048 x 2048px.

What are the free tools for designing your visual content?

Several clients worldwide are having problems in generating their visual content to make an eye-catchy post. They thought that the only way to do this is to spend money to buy photo editing software and programs like Adobe Photoshop. Without a doubt, this is the best photo editing software ever. If money is not an issue, you can buy a license for this software.

However, if you don’t have a budget to buy photo editing software or program, there are free tools you can use for visual content designing.  Without further ado, here are the free tools you can use to create beautiful and engaging designs without the need of a professional designer:

Canva

This is one of the most popular and best free platforms for designing your visual content. Several template sizes are social media-friendly, and it’s almost like the free version of Adobe Photoshop. You can even create professional infographics using their platform without the need of shelling out hundreds of dollars for outsourcing or buying Adobe Photoshop license.

Canva designs helps in creating a social authority online.

Pablo

This alternative free tool alone can make simple social media-friendly images for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. I personally use this on many occasions to design quotes and some other things.

Pablo by Buffer App Team

Online Image Editor

Another free alternative that you can use for creating and uploading images to Facebook and other platforms. It is a bit limited in features as compared to Canva but you sure get some value there too.

Online Video Editor

Moving forward

It is not that easy and simple for social media marketers to catch the attention of their audience with just text-based posts alone. If you want to gain influence for your brand, adding images to your post is the answer. It is why images can improve your brand’s social authority.

Or what do you think it? Let’s talk in the comment section below if you have addition or any feedback contrary to using images to boost brand’s social authority.

Is Google making an Android Car? Self Driving Car; No Steering Wheel, No Brakes

Google Inc is at it again, sitting behind the wheel and steering to your destination might soon become history.

The latest version of the self driving car was unveiled by Google on Tuesday night, this vehicle can navigate on its own and it does not have a steering, acceleration pedal nor brakes.

Driver-less car

The Google self driving car team leader said in his statement “Fully autonomous driving has always been the goal of our project.” we have thought we could improve road safety and assist people who can’t drive. We are now working on prototypes of vehicles which will drive you to where you are going at the push of a button.

The navigation software on this Google’s self driving car is the same as the previous model which has already zoom up to 70, 000 miles on the road. The first model of the self driving car has a steering wheel, the accelerator and brake pedals so that at a point, the driver can override the computer’s navigation; there has always been a driver behind the wheels on those models.

On this new driver-less car innovation, there wouldn’t be any need for the owner to look for parking space, as the car would do that on its own while you walk off to meet up your schedules. The Google blog post reporting this self driving car model added that, cases of drunken driving incident will be potentially wiped out; older people who already lost their faculty could now be mobile sitting behind the car.

Google self driving car team hopes to start testing the vehicle in earnest this summer. The sensor on the car is now being upgraded, but the same navigation technology in the driver laden is used in this driver-less car.

It’s not yet time to start lobbying the mart for this vehicle; it is still in its early stage of testing and not to be expected in market any time soon. Even the first driver-less car model by Google, the one with a steering and set of pedals does not have a release date yet. Experts are still projecting the end of the decade for the car to start its first commercial sales, however.

Google Making Tablet with 3D Image Capability to air Project Tango

Right from the days of the Nexus success and acquisition of Motorola mobility, Google seem to have established its feet in the gadget industry. Recently, we got a report that Google is developing a 7-inch tablet which will air its Project Tango 3D imaging capability.Project tango 3-D imaging

Starting from next month, Google plans to make 4,000 pieces of Project Tango tablet which will be equipped with sensors and components similar to the ones in Project Tango phones; two cameras, gyroscopes, depth sensor, orientation sensor, and a vision processing system.

Coincidentally, next month is Google’s annual developer conference and 4,000 is just accurate enough for the number the company may order aimed at distributing to the conference attendees.

Project Tango surfaced from Google’s Advance Technology and Projects (ATAP) group that was part of Motorola mobility. The project is aimed at equipping mobile devices with circuits and sensors that will enable it to create 3D models of local environs in real time.

Wouldn’t it be terrific, having a detailed 3D map of your surroundings, new possibilities that could come into mobile applications? Such information could help sight impaired people or even robots to navigate through unfamiliar surroundings. Last year, Google purchase few robot technology companies.

Facebook Inc also investing in something similar to the Project Tango as it planned to acquire Oculus VR, a company that makes futuristic virtual reality headgear. This kind of technology has gone beyond standard 3D display which has been around for some years, said head of research at Rutberg & Co., and investment bank that focuses on wireless and digital-media industry.

3D Smartphone were released in February, Google intends to build small quantity of its Project Tango tablets for developers to work on, so that they can create applications that will make the device appeal to customers as soon as it is released commercially.

Apart from Project Tango, Google in 2012 unveiled its internet connected eye wear, Google Glass and had only been available to developers and testers until now.

This approach is different from Apple who prefers to confidentially develop devices and staging a noisy release at consumer launches.

What Does Devaluation of Keywords Mean for SEOs

Can the devaluation of keywords impact your brand SEO results?

Since Hummingbird was announced by Google last year, there has been a lot of speculation about the impact that it is going to have on the search itself, and consequently on SEO. While we only had a short time to get familiar with the new algorithm, some trends are already becoming apparent, and we have gained enough insight into the workings of Hummingbird to be able to make some educated guesses.

Hummingbird seems to be dictating a more concept-oriented search in favor of the keyword based one. Along with ‘Not provided’, and Hummingbird’s approach to suggesting results, keywords are simply not as valuable a unit as they once were. This applies both to the research and reporting parts of SEO. Even though keyword research has to remain one of the essential parts of the process, you also have to consider a number of other search entities.

Devaluation of Keywords: The Impact of Hummingbird update on Search Results

Google Hummingbird Update
Devaluation of Keywords: This is how the latest Google algorithm update is affecting how your website comes up in search queries.

One of the greatest advantages of Hummingbird is the fact that it has a more comprehensive and better-organized understanding of different search entities. This includes everything from the entered query, time of the entry and neighboring queries to results returned for that query and the ads that accompany them. With such a scope it is easier for the algorithm to return results that are most relevant to the time and location on which the query is made.

While some of the information on the context in which the search was made has been considered for a while, Hummingbird balanced out the importance of different factors which enables it to do a better job of providing currently relevant results.

This could imply the increase of importance of the timelessness of your content, or at least the increase of awareness of its temporal nature. When you are writing content you should consider whether it will only be relevant during certain parts of the year, or until a certain point in the future. In some instances, Hummingbird will favor the freshest content, but it will be interesting to see how easy will it be for new content to outrank the old, already established sources on the subject.

Additionally, the fact that the algorithm relies heavily on co-occurrence, both in queries and in results, along with the devaluation of keywords means that focusing on the basic concept is more important than trying to suggest that you are doing so through the use of particular keywords. This is to say that you are not only advised to use different Google approved substitute terms in your content, but also to feel free and allow the algorithm to find you through question-based queries. Finding the recognized substitute terms is as easy as typing in a query and checking which words does Google suggest as appropriate synonyms by displaying them in bold.

Based on the (perhaps temporary) increase in rankings of websites optimized for question-based keywords, it seems that you can still do some keyword-based magic with your SEO, but the influence is not as direct as it once was, and it remains questionable for how long will you be able to maintain the results.

With this, we can now rest some of the speculations about the impact of Hummingbird update on SEO results including the devaluation of keywords.

Why Google Needs To Leverage Motorola in Android

It was an acquisition that stood to change the smartphone world, but to date it hasn’t made much impact. Nearly two years ago Google agreed acquire Motorola Mobility, giving the primary developer of Android a handset division to go with it. The possibilities were, and still are, endless. Yet it seems as though nothing has changed. To nearly every consumer, Motorola is still Motorola, rather than Google’s handset division.

According to Google, that’s the game plan. They claim to have acquired Morotola for its array of patents, which it will use, and has used, in defense of lawsuits from Apple and Microsoft. But with such a powerful asset within their company, it stands to reason that Google will eventually move forward with Motorola as their own vehicle for Android.

Right now it’s just what they need.

Facebook changes the game

When Facebook announced Facebook Home, it was met with little fanfare. Many people had decided, before even seeing the announcement, that they weren’t interested. Why would anyone want to make Facebook the center of their mobile experiences? Yet that misses a fundamental point about Facebook’s latest mobile gambit.

What Facebook accomplished was to essentially claim Android as its own. It didn’t go through the process of developing its own mobile OS, or commissioning a manufacturer to create an official “Facebook phone.” Instead they worked within the existing open architecture of Android to create something essentially new.

Don’t listen to tech snobs who had made a decision about Facebook Home before trying it: the platform does have plenty to offer. Even if people don’t switch now, Facebook has a foot in the door. Think of this like an experiment, such as those described by Eric Reis in The Lean Startup. Now Facebook can more closely monitor how people behave on their mobile phones and tweak their strategy accordingly.

In other words, Facebook is creating a new mobile landscape. It’s certain that others will follow, hijacking Android for their own gain. The only solution is for Android to fight back.

Learning from the best

When it comes to creating products that consumers love, there is perhaps no company more effective than Apple. Steve Jobs brought Apple back from the dead, because he knew how to create products that would resonate with consumers. Part of his formula involved combining hardware with software. The iPod required iTunes to run. The iPhone came with its own operating system.

Controlling both hardware and software allowed Apple to in turn control the whole experience. That is key in their ability to create products consumers want. With Android there is a fragmented experience. Google develops the software, but manufacturers create the devices. On top of that, they also create their own Android overlays, which changes the experience from device-to-device. An HTC and a Samsung smartphone might both run Android, but they both provide different experiences.

If Google utilizes Motorola to its fullest, it can realize that same level of control that Apple does. Google would deliver its own vision, the original vision, of the Android software, coupled with a fine-tuned hardware experience. It wouldn’t have to deal with HTC using an unpopular skin or Samsung using flimsy parts. It would be the exact phone that Google envisions. Chances are it’s a phone that consumers would enjoy.

Think about it in terms of the Nexus series. On those Google was able to control the software end. Now imagine they were able to add their own custom, presumably high-end, hardware. It’s something that would pique consumers, if not enthrall them.

Competitors ahoy

The final reason Google should take fuller advantage of Motorola: increasing competition. For a few years iPhone and Android were the only two real choices for consumers. BlackBerry had busted, and Microsoft continually failed to deliver a quality Windows Phone product. But this year the competition is getting fiercer. Google taking closer control of Android would put them in a better position.

Microsoft might not have much juice with Windows Phone 8, but the BlackBerry 10 phones have certainly made an impact (especially on an international basis). They’re not the only ones. Firefox announced dozens of partners for its Firefox OS, which it will release later this year. Samsung, the most popular Android manufacturer, has partnered on the Tizen OS, and will release a Tizen-based phone later this year.

With all this competition, it makes sense for Google to make Motorola its flagship Android. They could better position themselves in an increasingly dense marketplace. This goes especially if Samsung makes a move towards Tizen. Losing Samsung as a partner could hurt, but Google could more than compensate if it made Motorola the manufacturer of the Google Phone.

To date we have seen Google take little advantage of its Motorola acquisition outside the courtroom. Yet the potential is always there. We’re already hearing plenty about the Motorola X Phone. Could that be Google’s big move with Motorola, creating a closer alignment between Android software and hardware? Maybe. If not, it still stands to reason that Google will make such a play in the near future. The conditions are rips. That’s for certain.

Stay on the right side of Google with a Fast Network

Befriend Google with Fast Network

Whether you have an ecommerce site or a website simply filled with photos or content, it’s important your online offerings run as quickly as possible. Slow page loads are frustrating and can soon push people away from your website.

A previous study by 1&1 Internet found 71 per cent of UK internet users are inconvenienced by slow websites, with nine minutes wasted every day as a result of this. More than three-quarters of individuals have experienced negative emotions due to an unreliable or slow website, while 59 per cent of Britons believe the speed and reliability of websites they use is inconsistent.Fast Car on the run

This is why it’s important to use a hosting provider that delivers a fast and reliable network. Otherwise, you could face annoyed shoppers, lost sales, abandoned shopping baskets and reduced revenue. In addition, today’s online world means people are quick to discuss poorly-performing websites, whether on forums or social networking sites.

Twitter and Facebook are fantastic for customer service needs, but likewise, it also means consumers can see when others make complaints. The last thing you will want is complaints about slow websites clogging up your social media pages. Even before an individual has tried your service they might decide to go elsewhere off the back of seeing this feedback. Fast Internet connection speed

Reputation and sales aside, there is another reason why your website should be supported by a fast network – Google. It is important to get in the good books of this search engine. An August comScore report revealed that Google sites led the core search market with a 66.4 per cent share of search queries carried out. In second place – although with substantially less than Google – was Microsoft sites, which accounted for 15.9 per cent of the market.

These were followed by Yahoo! Sites (12.8 per cent), Ask Network (3.2 per cent) and AOL (1.7 per cent), and these smaller proportions make it clear why the layout, search engine optimisation tactics and page load speeds of your website should all meet Google’s standards.

Google is an important port of call for shoppers who are looking for a specific product or service, but the search engine giant charges businesses a lot more for its pay-per-click keywords function if its website suffers from slow page loads. Fast internet server by a fast host

If pages don’t hit the expected speeds, Google will also rank them lower than if they were to load a lot quicker. So, if your hosting provider does not allow you to enjoy a fast network, you could suffer the wrath of Google. Shoppers tend to only scan the first page of results when searching for a product or service, so if your company doesn’t feature on this, you could miss out on sales opportunities.

There are a few ways to overcome these obstacles. Firstly, the network you choose must have a low latency, which means there will be fewer hops between various networks. Secondly, it’s useful to find a hosting partner that owns its fibre-optic network, rather than using one from an internet service provider. In fact, in the case of PEER 1, its speedy network enjoys as much as 20 per cent lower latency levels than others, resulting in fewer delays and quicker page loads.

Since PEER 1 owns its own network, it is resilient, redundant and fast for its hosting customers. Choose the organisation for your own website, and you too can enjoy these benefits, as well as many more.

3 Ways To Make Your Blog Less Dependent On Google – Ditch Google!

Bloggers need to stop being so dependent on Google!

Chances are you’ve made big changes to your blog in the past year. That’s because Google, the world’s biggest traffic referrer, issued two updates that affected its search results. By now everyone knows of the Panda update that Google issued last year. This year they went straight for links, issuing the Penguin update. Both updates hit bloggers hard, and forced them to change the way they operate. But one thing has been made clear with these updates:

It’s not easy, since many bloggers latched onto Google and have stayed there out of comfort. But it will benefit every blogger if they can find other referral sources. That doesn’t mean ignoring Google as a referrer. It just means having more variety, in case Google makes further updates that baffle bloggers.

How to DITCH Google for getting traffic to your blogHow to get traffic without Google to your blog/website

1. Dig into your niche

In one way, digging deeper into a niche can hurt your traffic numbers. After all, chances are more people are interested in a top-level subject than a niche. But there are certain advantages to finding a narrow niche.

Referrals from top-level sites. When you write about a general subject, you have more competitors. Those competitors are unlikely to link to you, since that means sending readers and link juice your way. But if you blog about a niche topic, blogs that cover more general subjects are more apt to link to you. For instance, if you run a folk music blog, you have a chance of getting links from general music blogs. But if you run a general music blog, those blogs probably won’t send links your way. You are the competition.

More engaged fans. There might be fewer people overall interested in niche topics, but the fans who are interested tend to be more enthusiastic. You can then engage them in ways that you simply cannot with a top-level subject blog. Kevin Kelly explains this in his seminal article 1,000 True Fans. Win and engage those niche fans and you can realize the kind of success that often eludes top-level subject blogs.

More focused work. Top-level subject blogs often require great effort to stay afloat. For many that means posting dozens of times per day. That can lead to quick burnout for any blogger. Worse, it can leave the blogger grasping for ideas. Niche blogs tend to post less often, normally just once a day, which gives the blogger room to breathe. Since niche bloggers don’t have to chase every page view, they can afford to take a more balanced approach to their blogs.

Niche blogs have to overcome many obstacles to become true businesses. They can’t, for instance, rely on AdSense or other ad networks for revenue, since they don’t have the pure page views to make them worth the effort. But they can make up for that by offering exclusive products and services. They can also cut direct ad deals, removing the middle man by finding advertisers interested in their active and engaged fans.

2. Go social

When you work in the internet marketing field, you come across a wide variety of blogs daily. In just the past year I’d say I’ve visited more than 5,000 blogs, which comes to about 14 per day — assuming no weekends off and no vacation time. One thing that amazes me is that so many of these blogs either don’t have Twitter accounts, or else have fewer than 100 followers. They’re missing out on potential referrals.

Yes, gaining a Twitter following takes time. But taking the time to build a Twitter following will pay off. It’s just like link building efforts. You take the time to do that, right? You do, because you know that the only way to rank higher in the search results is to build a solid foundation of backlinks. But, as we’ve seen, Google has changed in the past year or so. It’s becoming harder to rank and get referrals from them.

Once Google issued the penguin update, my partners and I decided to change strategy. Instead of building links, we started to build our Twitter following. We didn’t go around following everyone in our niche. Instead we started using the account more actively. That meant a few things.

  • Adding insight. We post a few times a day, but we can’t cover everything in those posts. Sometimes we have points we want to make, but they just don’t fit. And so we drop these little tidbits on Twitter.
  • Responding to mentions. If people take the time to send you an @ reply, you should take the time to respond to them in kind. It actively engages them, and makes them want to come back for more.
  • Retweeting others. If someone else has something interesting to say and you think your followers would gain from it, don’t hesitate to retweet. Also remember: the people you retweet see that you retweeted them, so you are passively engaging them as well.
  • Tweet your posts. This goes without saying. If you can, you should tweet your posts manually. This especially goes for blogs that post once a day. If you use automated posting plugins, make sure to manually tweet links to those articles later in the day, framing the tweets for people who might have missed your original.

For about three months we’ve worked Twitter more actively than ever, and it has paid off. Not only have we gone from just under 8,000 to just under 10,000 followers (while following 177), but we’ve turned Twitter into our second-largest referrer. We estimate that if we keep this up Twitter will become our No. 1 referrer by October.

3. Mobile apps

For some readers, a mobile website is enough. They can just browse to your website and either see a mobile-specific layout, or else see a resized-for-mobile site, as you see with TechAtLast new design. But for many, many readers that is not enough to keep them around. They might visit from time to time, but they’re not really invested. The solution is a mobile site.

The realization came to me hard in the last few months. For starters, we’d been getting daily complaints about our mobile site. It would crash browsers and freeze phones. It did for mine, but I was using an old Android. Then, late last month I got the Galaxy S 4G phone, which is, as most tech geeks know, is one of the most powerful phones on the market. And guess what? It crashed that browser too.

Not only did we have that problem, but I realized something else when using the Galaxy S 4G: I wanted apps. Apps are great! I could spend hours and hours just browsing around Google Play for apps to fill all my home screens. I’m sure that iPhone users have the same experience in the App Store. Apps are fun. Apps are addictive. But most importantly, apps are engaging. You can really win over fans with a high quality mobile app.

Yes, creating a high quality mobile app will cost you money. But it will pay dividends as well. Instead of being a commodity — a blue link in the google results that looks like every other blue link — you can now be a unique, differentiated product. People will download your app and spend time with your app. They might spend time with others, but when they open your app they are focused on you. That’s quite a bit better than wading through a sea of google results.

Even better: people will pay a buck for your app. They might even pay two. As long as you deliver them a compelling experience, it’s proven that mobile users will shell out the money. Think your readers need convincing? Just point out all the things they spend $2 on every day without even thinking about it. What’s going to provide them more value: your app or a cheeseburger and fries off the dollar menu?

For years, blogs rode the Google train. They found ways to exploit the system and did so for monetary gain. But Google has taken steps to crack down on such behavior. We also don’t know what Google will do in the future to make life harder for bloggers. As such, we need to take action. Only a handful of blogs can survive while being dependent on Google. It’s time to detach yourself as much as possible. Work on going more niche, gaining a social following, and creating a mobile experience, and you’ll win over fans in different and more compelling ways.

Which other methods are you using aside Google search in driving traffic to your website? Please share them with us below.
