Looking back I remember the very first camera I ever used, it was one of the old Fuji disposable ones. I wasn’t allowed to have my own camera until I was about 12 years old. Back in the 80s we weren’t allowed to have things like this because they might get broken or our parents didn’t think we needed them. When I was 12 and finally able to have a camera I was given a Polaroid that I treasured like a gold medal. At that time, this was considered an extremely impressive piece of technology, as it would instantaneously print pictures on the spot, although over time the quality of the prints deteriorated of course. Nowadays, not many of the kids today could even tell you what a Polaroid is – I know mine can’t! Today you couldn’t think of a day without a camera whether it might be your new Nikon or Cannon. Or at least you probably have a camera on your smartphone. Could you imagine logging onto your Facebook account and there were no photos due to life without a camera? Whether you are a professional photographer doing just another photo shoot or a small child taking a picture of your favourite doll you will have powerful tools at your disposal. With so many apps and programs out there one can even add some very artistic effects and manipulate their images to give any desired effect they wish. The other day I took an old photo from when I was little that was taken on a regular old point and shoot camera and fixed the grainy quality to give a more high definition looking photo that looks as if it was taken a few days ago instead of almost 30 years ago. How times have changed!

We might ask ourselves what will come in future years… will it be cameras that are voice activated and take photos when you say a command word. A glimpse of this future was seen recently with Google glasses – wearable so that the user can go about his daily business and take pictures on the fly without even the need to take any sort of contraption out. To be honest I don’t know what the future holds for cameras but with all these upgrades over the years I am quite optimistic that we are due for some more amazing technological breakthroughs!

On thing I can say for sure is that cameras have come a long way from the 1800s box style cameras to the digital point and shoot cameras with changeable lenses, security cameras and so much more that we use now. Even so, despite the fact we have come so far, in 200 years I can see us looking back and wondering how we ever survived with what we have now!

Google making Android game console to rival Apple future product

The Android game console and digital watch will prepare Google for combat with similar devices Apple Inc may release in the near future.

Google not long released a media streaming device powered by its Android, and now a second version of the Nexus Q unveiled last year is coming public soon.

One of those devices will be coming out this fall, and will be marketed by Google itself.

Asking a Google spokeswoman about the issue, she declined to comment.

The Android gaming console and other planned hardware are part of Google’s effort to build the success of the Android software announced in 2008 which now powers about 75% of smartphones and 57% of tablets shipped worldwide in the first quarter as the report released by research firm IDC.

The latest versions of PlayStation and Xbox have recently been unveiled by Sony and Microsoft and are expected to kick off sales later in the year. Market researcher PwC released a report saying $24.9 billion sales of game console last year was credited to Nintendo’s account.

The veiled source claimed that Google is acting in line with expectation of rival Apple Inc will release a videogame console alongside with the next Apple TV product launch.

Ouya Inc is a startup on game console that makes Android-powered gaming console, it began selling a $99 Android game console last week and Google has been critically watching the progress.

Some of the spokes person in the source said, the internet search giant will wrap up development on the next Android version which is intended to release this fall. Those anonymous informants said Google is going to name the next Android as “Key Lime Pie” and manufacturers such as Samsung has been licensed to use the software beyond smartphone and tablets. Other appliances and wearable devices will be powered by Android.

BlackBerry records Loss for the Quarter

As the quarter ended, Research in Motion has released its quarterly financial report for last quarter; BlackBerry recorded a more than expected loss of $84 million.RIM BlackBerry shares

Analyst has predicted a 6-cents gain per shares by the end of the quarter according to a Thomson Reuters survey and a surprise gain the following quarter, but instead, it was a woeful loss of 16 cents per share. The Friday report quaked BlackBerry’s share price down by 27% in early trading.

The company released its BlackBerry 10 about 5 months ago; everybody had thought that this release will be a push up for the rallying RIM’s BlackBerry share especially in the US.

At the quarter that ended in June 1, there was a little sign of the expected revival, when BlackBerry reported that, it had shipped 6.8 million handsets during that quarter, compared to the 7.8 million it shipped a year ago at the same quarter. BlackBerry 10 was 2.7 million out of that whole number.

An analyst at RBC Dominion Securities, Mark Sue wrote “A full quarter of BB10 sell-in should have resulted in better sales.”

When Thorsten Heins, RIM’s CEO was interviewed about customer’s reception of the BlackBerry 10, he said it will be too early to give an answer due to the fact that not all BlackBerry 10 models were available during the quarter, the version with the physical keyboard, BlackBerry Q10, just released into the US market last week.

Heins added “we are doing what we said we would do” and further warned investors of likelihood further losses this year, as RIM increases expenses on BB10 promotion and adverts.

BlackBerry lost 4million customers down to 72 million globally, and the company said it would stop releasing that figure in the near future.

The Canadian smartphone maker was able to increase its revenue by 15 percent $3.07 billion compare to the $2.8 billion revenue of same quarter last year, although the amount was below what analysts were expecting.

While there seems no hope for BlackBerry in the United States and other major markets, the company relies on growth in less economically developed markets to make up to its challenges. But the result from the last quarter shows there could be a calamity.

Devaluation and Foreign currency control in Venezuela reduced RIM’s earning by 10 cents a share d Latin America by 6 cents, places which were important markets for RIM.

Considering how RIM has so much invested in advertisement for its new product, the BlackBerry 10 seem to have failed to bring the company to the state it were in North America a year ago. Mr. Heins noted a time, when people were declaring the BlackBerry dead.

A report from RIM said BlackBerry dropped in revenue by 4.2 percent in North America a year ago to $761 million.

Finally, the CEO pointed to an increase of 15 percent by the company’s holdings which totals to $3.1 billion giving a sign that the company still has the financial strength to make the BlackBerry 10 a success.

Samsung Launch sales of Curved OLED TVs

Sony’s TV business has been unprofitable for nine years and has refused to make OLED sets for the past six years.

Although the company has been engaging in researches and development work, but it has not laid out plans to venture into making OLED screens for consumers. At the CES 2013, Sony showcased a prototype ultrahigh-definition, 56-inch OLED TV. It is working with Panasonic Corp to develop new production method for OLED panels.

Samsung on the other hand has been hyping OLED TV sets for years hoping that as it builds expertise in the technology, production cost will fall.

Although for some couple of years, the company has to continue in the manufacturing of normal LCD sets to save its profit margin from falling until things get right for the large-screen curved OLED TV models.

Samsung has been experiencing weak demand in its consumer electronics reaching 2% in the first quarter.

The OLED TV models have been unveiled over a year now by Samsung, but there have been difficulties in bringing them to market.

Apart from the curved OLED TV technologies, other product introduced by Samsung includes; Ultra-high definition models with 55 and 65-inch LCD screens.

Lighting is the finishing touch to any well-designed building. The skill of lighting design is now a recognized profession, although many of us still make do with the old fashioned suspended light bulb in the centre of the room.

Good lighting design is all about literally showing off a building in the best lights. As well as providing the best illumination, good lighting design will take account of ecological factors, efficiency and the aesthetic appearance of the lights themselves.

We are becoming more aware of lighting design – up and down lighters are becoming more common for example, but many homes are still designed with the standard dangling bulb.

The roots of lighting design lie in physics. In 1860 a British scientist called John Tyndall was working on a glacier when he first observed that shining more light on something did not always make it more visible.

However, it took some time for Tyndall’s discovery to filter through to architectural lighting design. Through the 20th century, the spread of cheap electricity through society meant that a more-is-better philosophy dominated the thinking behind lighting design. The iconic sight of the American city was of brightly illuminated skyscrapers even if those skyscrapers were empty.

Lighting design did become more sophisticated. Concerns about energy use lead to the use of more daylight. Designers also came to recognize that much of the electricity used in illuminating buildings was waster – there was massive overkill in lighting.

Lighting has a practical role, to provide the right level of illumination for the room’s purpose, whether that be working or just relaxing, at a level that is comfortable for the occupants. The lighting should also be attractive in itself as well as efficient and environmentally friendly.

The best lighting design goes beyond this to become part of the attraction of the room and the best practice in lighting design is to involve lighting designers early in the process of designing a room or building.

Daylight is the first consideration in lighting design. Then the materials used in the room’s design should be considered. A room that is finished in dark wood, for example, will take a lot more lighting to achieve the same level of brightness as a similar space finished in light colours.

The lighting should also be designed to complement the finish of the room. Architects usually specify plaster lights – they blend with the commonest wall finishing material, can be easily painted to fit any colour scheme and are heat and fire resistant.

Plaster is also capable of a much better quality finish than the other commonest finishes, ceramics and metals. That means cast, curved lights and even very elaborate luminaries can be produced to the best possible quality and finish. Plaster lights are also well suited to low energy lighting systems.

Indirect lighting needs more thought than a simple central light bulb. The surfaces from which light will be reflected must be considered as must any obstacles to the lighting scheme.

Research suggests that good lighting, maximizing the exposure to daylight and avoiding ‘over lighting’ can have a positive impact on worker’s productivity, student exam results and even patient recovery in hospital. At home, you’ll feel better with better lighting. Bad lighting can cause tiredness and headaches.

The science of lighting design is still evolving. Physics and biology are explaining how we see things and designers are incorporating this knowledge into their work.

While the science moves on, one of our most ancient building materials – plaster – remains the unbeatable best for curved lights.
